Over het museum
The Severn Valley Railway opened in 1862 as part of a longer line between Shrewsbury and Hartlebury, built through the Severn valley in Worcestershire and Shropshire. It mainly served local passengers and freight, and traffic declined from the 1920s. British Railways closed it to passengers in 1963, and a campaign to save the line began in a pub in 1965. In 1966 British Railways agreed to sell the line for £25,000, and the first locomotive arrived in 1967.
Regular preserved services began in 1970 between Bridgnorth and Hampton Loade. The line was extended to Bewdley in 1974, and the section to Kidderminster reopened in 1984. Today the railway runs 16 miles of single track with steam and heritage diesel locomotives and restored stations. Only a small core of the large fleet belongs to the railway company; many engines belong to associated groups or private owners.
The Engine House at Highley, a covered museum beside the station, opened to the public in 2008. It displays out-of-service locomotives and rolling stock and is free to enter. A landslip in January 2025 cut off Bridgnorth from the rest of the line, and the full line reopened in July 2025.

Specially adapted carriages with wider double doors, an accessible toilet and a portable ramp are meant to run on each service, but the diesel railcar does not offer this; wheelchairs up to 700 mm wide, 1,200 mm long and 350 kg loaded are accepted. Dining carriages cannot take a wheelchair at a table and passengers must be able to step up or down into them. Fully accessible toilets are at Kidderminster, The Engine House at Highley and Bridgnorth, and the Engine House has a lift to its first-floor restaurant. Blue Badge holders do not pay for parking at any railway car park and must report to the booking office to get a code. The stations date from the 1850s and can be difficult: the Kidderminster forecourt is cobbled, wheelchair users at Bewdley need staff help at the barrow crossing, and Bridgnorth has short steep slopes. Assistance dogs travel free. The Visitor Services Team can help with questions.
