Over het museum

The South London Gallery traces its origins to the South London Working Men's College, set up in 1868 by the philanthropist William Rossiter. It developed into a free library and art gallery, and in 1891 it opened on its present site on Peckham Road with the aim of bringing art to the people of south London.

Over the 20th century the gallery built up a historic collection of more than 5,000 paintings, drawings, prints, sculptures, ceramics, coins and textiles, now looked after by Southwark Council as part of its art collection. From the 1990s it began to focus on contemporary art and acquired works by artists such as Tracey Emin and Gavin Turk, creating a contemporary collection of about 145 works.

Today the gallery shows international and British contemporary art in free exhibitions and runs events, residencies and learning projects. The Clore Studio and the Orozco Garden, designed in 2016 by the artist Gabriel Orozco with architects and botanists, extend the original building. In 2018 it opened the former Peckham Road Fire Station, a Grade II listed building of 1867, as a second venue, which houses further galleries and an archive display. The charity also runs Art Block, a creative space for local children and families on a nearby housing estate, and the South London Louie café-restaurant is on site.
