Over het museum
Dulwich Picture Gallery opened in 1811 and is regarded as the world's first purpose-built public art gallery. Its building was designed by Sir John Soane to show a collection of paintings to visitors, and the gallery has been cared for ever since as a place where great art is shared with the public. It is now an independent charity and receives no government or local authority funding.
The collection is one of the finest groups of Old Master paintings in the world, and is especially rich in French, Italian and Spanish Baroque pictures and in British portraits from Tudor times to the nineteenth century. It includes works by Rembrandt, Poussin and Rubens, among them Rubens's Venus, Mars and Cupid.
In recent years the gallery completed its largest redevelopment in more than twenty years, known as Open Art. The project added the ArtPlay Pavilion, a play space where children under eight explore art, a free Sculpture Garden, the Lovington Sculpture Meadow and environmental improvements such as a ground-source heat pump. The gallery also shows changing exhibitions and displays and runs learning programmes with schools and communities in the neighbouring boroughs of Southwark, Lambeth and Lewisham.
