Over het museum

St Vigeans is a small village just outside Arbroath in Angus that was once the centre of a royal estate and a place of great religious importance. More than a thousand years ago it was busy with pilgrims and monks. The late medieval church stands on a striking mound about 12 metres high, where a Pictish church or monastery may once have stood, and carved stones were set up around it to convey Christian messages. Some were later built into the church walls, and a few remain in place.

The museum brings together the 38 carved stones found in the village. They are among the finest examples of Pictish art and form part of Scotland's national collection of early art. The quality of the carving on some of them matches anything of their time in western Europe. The collection includes a house shrine and a fragment of a huge free-standing cross.

The best-known piece is the Drosten Stone, a cross-slab from the early 800s carved with an intricate cross on one face and figures and symbols on the other. Its rare inscription uses words from three languages: Latin, Pictish and Old Irish. The stones show saintly figures, devilish imps and strange animals, as well as details of Pictish clothing, riding equipment and hunting weapons. The museum is cared for by Historic Environment Scotland.
