Over het museum
The house began as a modest cottage called Poplar Grove, which the Liverpool shipping merchant Duncan Gibb bought in 1838 as a summer retreat. He enlarged it into a country house with gardens and farmland, and after retiring from shipping in 1862 he lived there until his death in 1867.
In 1887 his granddaughters Alice and Janet moved in and stayed for almost a century. During those decades the rooms, furniture and household objects changed very little, so the house gives a detailed picture of Victorian and Edwardian domestic life, from the formal reception rooms to the servants' working areas.
Manx National Heritage bought the house, its contents, gardens and land in 1976 and now runs it as a museum. Visitors can see the family portraits and a Broadwood grand piano, a Victorian shower in the carriage shed, the servants' bells in the kitchen, a threshing barn with a horse-drawn mill, a duck pond and a walled garden with views towards North Barrule.
