Over het museum
The Gresham family, one of the great merchant dynasties of Tudor England, took up residence at Titsey when Sir John Gresham, a former Lord Mayor of London, bought the manor in 1534 or 1535. He invested in land across the Kent and Surrey border and left his heirs an estate whose core has passed down intact to today. His son William built a new house, which was largely demolished in the 18th century apart from one small wing. The Greshams supported the king in the Civil War, and in 1643 the house was briefly taken over by Parliamentarians.
After a period of decline in the early 18th century, Sir John Gresham, who married an heiress, restored the family fortunes and built a smaller, symmetrical Georgian house on the old site, which is the core of the present building. In 1804 his daughter Katherine Maria, the last of the Greshams, married William Leveson Gower. Their grandson Granville Leveson Gower, squire of Titsey for much of the later 19th century, remodelled the house and gardens and decorated the house with the heraldry of the three families. He also excavated two Roman sites on the estate.
Two of his grandsons, Richard and Thomas, restored the house and gardens after the Second World War, when it had been requisitioned and occupied by Canadian troops. They established the Titsey Foundation to preserve the house, garden, church and parkland for public benefit, on the understanding that the house continues as a family home. Today the estate is open to visitors in the summer and offers woodland walks all year round.

The Victorian walled garden has well-formed gravel paths that wheelchair users can manage in good weather but not in the rain. The house tour covers two floors with steps between many rooms, so it is not suited to visitors with severe mobility problems, and there are no public toilets in the house. The tea rooms have good access, accessible toilets in the nearby dairy and a disabled car park alongside. The tea rooms are about 300 metres (a 10-minute walk) from the house; visitors with limited mobility can ask the office in advance to arrange a wheelchair. Only guide dogs are allowed in the house and gardens.
