Over het museum

Trerice is a manor house in mid-Cornwall that was begun in 1572 by John Arundell V, whose family had inherited the estate through marriage and were well connected at the royal court. His son Sir John Arundell VI became known as John for the King after defending Pendennis Castle for Charles I in the Civil War, and a later Arundell was made a baron after the Restoration.

In 1675 a marriage brought the estate to the Acland family of Devon, who held it for generations but rarely lived there. Long periods under absentee owners meant that the house escaped the building fashions of later centuries and is still little altered. The Great Hall has an enormous table made for the room, which cannot be taken out, and a window of 576 tiles of 16th- to 19th-century glass. The Great Chamber has a decorative plasterwork ceiling whose design inspired the knot garden.

The Elton family arrived as tenants of the last private owner and stayed on when the National Trust bought Trerice in 1953; John Elton paid for repairs to the roof and the remaining parts of the house. Today the house shows life from the 1500s to the 1950s and contains 17 clocks, including a longcase clock by Thomas Tompion from about 1680, as well as Cornish paintings and a Tudor bed. The grounds include an Elizabethan-style knot garden, an orchard of Cornish apple varieties and a lawn where visitors can play the old Cornish game of kayles.
