Over het museum

Lanhydrock was built by the Robartes family, who made their fortune supplying fuel and credit to the Cornish tin industry. The family bought the estate in 1620, and the main mansion was largely completed by John Robartes, later 1st Earl of Radnor. The Long Gallery, finished in the 1630s, has a plaster ceiling with 36 scenes from the Book of Genesis and holds a rare library of more than 3,000 books printed before 1700.

For much of the 18th century the house stood largely empty and in poor repair, until later owners began to invest in it again. A serious fire in 1881 destroyed most of the main building. The Agar-Robartes family rebuilt it in a Victorian style, and it became a family home once more, with modern kitchens, servants' quarters and a nursery.

The house and estate were transferred to the National Trust in 1954. Today visitors can follow three routes through the house, covering the Robartes family, the family of Victorian children and the servants below stairs. The Long Gallery ceiling was fully conserved in 2024, and the visit also includes a formal garden, parkland and woods.
