Over het museum
U-534 was a Type IXC/40 submarine built in Hamburg and commissioned in December 1942. She was used mainly for training and did not sink any ships. On 5 May 1945, in the Kattegat near the Danish island of Anholt, two RAF Liberator aircraft attacked her while she was on the surface and she sank. Of the 52 men on board, 49 survived.
The wreck was found in 1986 and raised in August 1993, and the boat was brought to Birkenhead in 1996, where she formed part of the Warship Preservation Trust's collection until that museum closed in 2006. She is the only U-boat recovered after being sunk in combat and is one of four surviving Second World War U-boats. Merseytravel acquired her in 2007, and she was cut into sections so that visitors could look inside.
A visitor attraction called U-Boat Story opened beside the Woodside Ferry Terminal in 2009 and closed in 2020. Since 2021 the boat has been in the care of Big Heritage, which is building a new museum called Battle of the Atlantic Story with U-534 as its centrepiece. The museum is planned to open in 2027, and prices and opening times have not yet been announced.
