Over het museum

V&A Dundee is Scotland's first design museum and the first Victoria and Albert museum outside London. The idea began at the University of Dundee in 2007, where it was proposed as a way to anchor the regeneration of the city's waterfront. An international design competition in 2010 was won by the Japanese architect Kengo Kuma, whose first building in the United Kingdom this is. His design was inspired by the cliffs on Scotland's east coast and by Dundee's history as a port, and part of the building projects out over the River Tay.

The museum was built on the site of the former Olympia Leisure Centre. Construction started in 2014 and took longer than planned, with an opening date first set for 2017. The building, clad in precast concrete panels, cost around £80 million and opened to the public on 15 September 2018, attracting 100,000 visitors in its first three weeks.

The permanent Scottish Design Galleries bring together about 300 objects, from architecture and fashion to engineering and video-game design, drawn from the V&A's collections and from Scottish museums and designers. A highlight is the Oak Room, designed by Charles Rennie Mackintosh in 1908 for a Glasgow tearoom and rebuilt from more than 700 original parts. A display called Stories from the Building, opened in 2023, shows how the museum itself was designed and built. Alongside these, the museum stages temporary exhibitions, some of them ticketed, and runs a programme of events, learning activities and trails.
