Om museet
The Frietmuseum opened in May 2008 in the Saaihalle on Vlamingstraat. The museum focuses on the history of the potato and the fry and also presents Belgian fries as part of art, music and film.
The route begins with the origin of the potato in South America, more than 10,000 years ago, and shows how the plant came to Europe. This is followed by machines for peeling, cutting and frying potatoes, the origin of the first sauce, a fry stand, and fries in art, comic strips and in the city of Bruges.
The collection consists of three parts: old machines from a collector from Merchtem, Inca pots shaped like potatoes, and a collection of artworks on the potato and the fry stand. After your visit, you can taste fries and Belgian meat dishes with sauces in the medieval cellar of the building.
