Om museet
The Gerard Meeusen Museum is the brainchild of Gerard Meeusen (1900–1965). From 1917 Meeusen worked as an administrative employee for the municipality of Essen and had a strong fondness for the past. Besides searching local and regional archives, he tried to save as much material heritage from loss as possible.
The museum is located in the attic of Essen town hall. The collection has grown almost entirely from donations by people from the region. It gives an insight into life in the Noorderkempen in the 18th, 19th and early 20th centuries.
Volunteers of the Royal Local History Circle of Essen look after the collection. That circle, founded in 1929 as the Oudheidkundige Kring (Antiquarian Circle), has been working for almost a hundred years to manage, preserve and open up the past of Essen.
