Om museet
The Karrenmuseum in Essen grew out of the collection of Alfons Tireliren, a teacher with a great passion for history. Around 1950 he began to keep carts, wagons and carriages, and stored them in a shed on a patch of woodland in Wildert. In 1971 the collection moved, on the initiative of the Koninklijke Heemkundige Kring, to a new site behind the Kiekenhoeve. That year is regarded as the founding of the museum; Tireliren remained its curator until his death in 1981.
After 1971 the site grew steadily. In 1976 an 18th-century barn from Essendonk was moved there and now serves as the reception building. In 1979 a forge and a wheelwright's workshop were added. In 2005 the vzw Karrenmuseum Essen took over the collection from the heemkundige kring, in 2006 the museum was officially recognised (erkend) as a museum, and since 2016 it has been a regional museum. In 2021 it celebrated its fiftieth anniversary with the reopening of the Koetshuis (carriage house).
The collection comprises more than three hundred vehicles and shows the history of unmotorised transport. It is displayed in open and semi-open depots and in the Koetshuis. The museum also places strong emphasis on contemporary craftsmanship and sustainability: there are workshops such as a wheelwright's, forge, sawmill and ropemaking workshop, a restoration studio where volunteers look after the collection, a library, and the museum also works as an expertise centre.
