Om museet
The Industriemuseum is housed in the former Desmet-Guéquier cotton-spinning mill on the Minnemeers. The main building dates from 1905–1912 and was modelled on the cotton mills of Manchester. In the forecourt stands the statue of Pierre De Geyter, the composer of the Internationale.
The museum began as the Museum voor Industrie, Arbeid en Textiel (MIAT), the Museum for Industry, Labour and Textiles. Since the 1970s many relics of the Industrial Revolution had been scrapped or demolished. From 1985 MIAT used the factory as a depot. In 1989 the Ghent city council decided that the building was the right location for the museum, and in spring 1991 the museum moved to the Minnemeers, together with the museum library. In 2018 it reopened under the name Industriemuseum.
The permanent displays extend over several floors: the main exhibition ‘Over mensen en machines’ on the Industrial Revolution, a printing department on three centuries of the graphic industry, and the textile department ‘100% textiel’. The collection includes, among other things, the oldest surviving twisting mill in Europe and an English Mule Jenny, a spinning machine that was smuggled into Ghent. The museum calls itself a living museum: working machines are demonstrated, and there are workshops and a Tinker Studio where visitors can experiment with materials and techniques themselves. At the top of the building you have a panoramic view of the historic city centre and the nineteenth-century industrial belt.
