Om museet
The Tournai Archaeology Museum occupies the former Mont-de-Piété, a listed Spanish Renaissance building dating from 1622, on the rue des Carmes. It presents local and regional collections ranging from prehistory to the Middle Ages.
The Tournaisis has yielded many traces of human occupation: from Neanderthal man, present in the Scheldt plains about 70,000 years ago, to the hunters of the Palaeolithic and the farmers of the Neolithic, who left their settlements and tools. Pieces from recent excavations are classified as “Treasures of the Fédération Wallonie-Bruxelles”: a remarkable lead sarcophagus decorated in the 4th century, discovered in the Gallo-Roman necropolis of the rue Perdue, and exceptional elements from the Saint-Brice quarter, where in 481 Childeric, father of Clovis, was buried with his horses and his entourage.
The museum has been closed to the public since 4 March 2022, for safety reasons. The City of Tournai states that it is currently closed and that no reopening date is scheduled.
