Om museet
The museum grew out of the passion of its founder, who has owned a small farm to restore in Mortier since 1976. Around 1978, the village festival committee took over some of the farm’s rooms for the local fête, and several old tools, including a wrought-iron fork given by the last farmer, decorated the premises. The fork remained the first object in the collection, which is where the museum’s name comes from.
In 1987, an exhibition on the harvest of the past in a neighbouring village convinced the founder to pursue his project: he gathered objects from residents, at flea markets in the region, and drew inspiration from his visits to the Musée de la Vie wallonne in Liège. The museum officially opened in August 1989 with one room and a few dozen objects, and it has grown ever since.
Today the collection comprises about 5,000 objects, displayed by theme in the former farm: manual agricultural tools, instruments from the region’s farms and related trades, and objects of rural everyday life. It also includes a few unusual pieces, such as a series of saints once venerated in the countryside. The museum is a strictly private initiative, supported by the Blegny municipal administration and by the cultural affairs department of the Province of Liège.
