Om museet

The Belgian poet Maurice Carême (1899-1978), known mainly for his poetry for children, lived from 1933 until his death in a white house built in the 1930s in Anderlecht. True to his wishes, the house became a museum after his death and has been kept intact. The Fondation Maurice Carême, created in 1975 as a public-interest foundation, manages the poet's work and keeps the place alive.

The visit delves into the intimacy of writing: visitors see the setting where the poet worked, the places that inspired him and the long path from the first draft to the published book. On the walls hang paintings by painter friends who sometimes illustrated his collections, such as Paul Delvaux, Roger Somville, Felix De Boeck, Marcel Delmotte or Jules Lismonde.

The museum also holds a remarkable literary heritage: rare editions, art books, manuscripts, scores by composers who set his poems to music (notably Francis Poulenc and Darius Milhaud) and correspondence with writers. In the neighbourhood, a poetic trail links façades decorated with tiles bearing poems by Maurice Carême.
