Om museet
The Casemate de Wittring is an infantry work of the Maginot Line, built in 1938 in the fortified sector of the Saar. It has two levels and four armoured cupolas: two for mixed armament and two for observers with light machine guns. It belonged to the neighbouring Haut-Poirier work.
In June 1940 the casemate was not attacked directly. Its crew, about a dozen men, surrendered to the Germans on June 21, during the attack on Haut-Poirier. The German army then occupied the site until the end of 1944 or the beginning of 1945.
A family bought the casemate in 1987. The entrance had been destroyed and the interior was full of rubbish. Restoration began in 1992; the Amicale de la Casemate de Wittring, officially founded in 1997, continues the work. The cupolas, generators, searchlights and entrance have been restored. The site is now open to visitors.
