Om museet
The Fontenay-le-Comte museum was founded in 1875 thanks to the bequest of Eugène de Mouillebert, a scholar and collector from the town. After his son died during the war of 1870, he bequeathed his collection of paintings, drawings and art objects to his native town, together with a farm whose income was to be used to enrich the collection.
Since 1922, the museum has occupied the former presbytery of the Notre-Dame church. After renovation work, it opened to the public on October 19, 1924 under the name Musée vendéen. Its first curator, Émile Boutin, wanted to give it a countywide scope, with collections of ancient archaeology, ethnography and fine arts. From the late 1970s until 1986 it was redesigned and refocused on southern Vendée. It has held the Musée de France label since 2003, and its current name since 2005.
The route included, among other things, Gallo-Roman glassware, collections of folk arts and traditions, furniture, an ornithology collection, a gallery of fine arts, a room on the town in the Renaissance and an urban model. The museum has been closed to free visits since February 2022, first for a collections project and then for renovation of the building and the exhibition design. The town announces its reopening for the second half of 2028.
