Om museet
Mouilleron-en-Pareds, a village in the Vendée between plain and bocage, produced two figures of the 20th century: Georges Clemenceau (born 1841) and Jean de Lattre de Tassigny (born 1889). The first museum, known as the “Musée des Deux Victoires”, grew out of a bequest: Marshal de Lattre’s widow, who had received her husband’s archives and mementos, had them installed on the upper floor of the town hall with the support of André Malraux. It opened on November 19, 1959 and became a national museum on April 18, 1961.
In 1975, Marshal de Lattre’s birthplace and its gardens joined the museum and opened to the public. This late 19th-century middle-class house, built to a plan dated 1869, has barely changed. Georges Clemenceau’s birthplace was inaugurated on June 13, 2018 and opened to visitors on June 15.
The Clemenceau-de Lattre national museum now brings together these two houses, both labelled “Musée de France” and “Maisons des Illustres”. At the Clemenceau house, a historical, biographical and civic museum presents around 200 objects and 30 multimedia displays in a self-guided visit; at the de Lattre house, visits are guided. The village also stands as a symbol of reconciliation between the “two Vendées”, royalist and republican.
