Om museet
Came, a village on the edge of the Basque Country, the Landes and Béarn, is known for its chair makers: workshops producing chairs were set up here in the 19th century. The Lataillade family founded a workshop there in 1860, which made traditional straw-seated chairs and has been handed down from generation to generation.
The Musée de la chaise was created in 2007 by the family, with Joseph Lataillade and his son Jean-Jacques. It shows how the tools evolved and how the know-how was passed on. The aim was to revive the trade at a time when modern techniques had made people forget the old way of making chairs.
The museum presents around a hundred authentic traditional tools and tells the craft memory of the village. It complements the visit to the chair makers’ workshops in Came. Jean-Jacques Lataillade, of the fifth generation, carries on the trade in the neighboring workshop, which he also opens to visitors with its exhibition space.
