Om museet
The museum is housed in the Darrémoudine house, a Béarnais house in the old town of Salies-de-Béarn, about fifty meters from the tourist office and the spa. It is run by the Amis du Vieux Salies association.
The visit unfolds over three levels. On the first floor, the “corridor of time” traces the origins of salt production from Gallo-Roman times to the present day, with a salt-shaper’s workshop, accounts from people who work with salt, and an animated model of the salt-water basin. On the second floor, the exhibition “The Town of Two Faces” explores the birth of the spa town from 1850 beside the old village, where Béarnais traditions survived. On the third floor, a geology room explains why the subsoil of Salies and of the Béarn des Gaves contains so much salt.
Collections can be visited independently thanks to wall labels, interactive terminals, films and projections. Guided tours are offered by reservation, led by a volunteer.
