Om museet

The museum opened on November 11, 2011, in Meaux, Seine-et-Marne. It is based on the collection of the historian Jean-Pierre Verney, assembled over almost half a century and acquired in 2005 by the Communauté d'agglomération du Pays de Meaux, which then launched the museum project.

The 7,000 m² building, designed by the architect Christophe Lab, is a contemporary structure in concrete, glass and metal. It offers views of the nearby American monument and includes spaces designed for certain major pieces, such as domes for aircraft, a pit for a tank and a reconstructed battlefield.

The permanent route, of about 3,000 m², is presented at eye level and follows the upheavals of 1914 to 1918: advances in medicine, communications, industrialization, changes in society and the role of women. Visitors can see, hear and handle period objects, with numerous multimedia devices.

The collection includes more than 70,000 objects and documents: uniforms from most of the belligerent countries, weapons, artillery, heavy equipment, everyday objects from the front and the home front, and a substantial holding of documents and graphic arts.
