Om museet
The Museum of the Service de santé des armées is located at Val-de-Grâce, in the cloister of the former royal abbey, Place Alphonse-Laveran, in Paris. It was created in 1916 following a circular of May 5 that year; its origins go back to the School of Military Health Service, founded at Val-de-Grâce in 1850. The museum has been open to the public since 1986.
The route presents military medicine: the staff of the health service, its missions and training, the evacuation chain for wounded soldiers from the battlefield to hospitals, advances in war surgery, and wax casts of the faces of soldiers wounded in World War I. It also shows underwater and aerospace medicine, with a hyperbaric chamber, the work of military pharmacists on the great expeditions of the 19th century, and the health and humanitarian action of the armed forces in civilian life.
The collection of doctors Jacques and François Debat complements the ensemble with Italian and French faience, medical instruments and 103 mortars, the oldest of which date back to ancient Egypt. The visit also includes the former chapter house of the nuns and the church of Val-de-Grâce, which holds six works by Philippe de Champaigne.
