Om museet
The museum originated in the bequest of Jean Faure (1862–1942), a Parisian pharmacist and industrialist, patron and collector. Between 1920 and 1942 he assembled paintings, sculptures and graphic works, partly thanks to his friend, the art dealer André Schoeller. After many years spent as a visitor to Aix-les-Bains, he bequeathed his collections to the town in 1942 and asked that a museum be devoted to them.
The Musée Faure opened in 1949 in the Villa des Chimères, built in 1902 on the heights of the town. The 19th-century fine arts collections include works by Degas, Renoir, Sisley, Cézanne, Pissarro, Jongkind, Boudin, Foujita, Bonnard and Vuillard. They also include 34 sculptures by Auguste Rodin, among the most important ensembles in Europe, as well as ceramics and souvenirs of the poet Alphonse Lamartine.
The museum has been closed to the public since December 2024. The renovation and extension project, now called “La Villa, musée des Beaux-Arts”, provides for works starting in summer 2026, the reinstallation of the works in early 2027 and reopening in March 2028. During the closure, several works are on loan to other museums.
