Om museet
Auguste Rodin moved to Meudon in 1893, to the Villa des Brillants. He lived there for the last twenty years of his life and brought together his house, studios and park, which overlooks the Seine valley. The sculptor and his companion Rose Beuret, who both died in 1917, rest in the garden beneath a version of Le Penseur.
From 1900 onwards, Rodin also had a studio built to house his collection of Greco-Roman marbles and other ancient sculptures. A pavilion for displaying his works, set up in Paris for the 1900 World's Fair, was later re-erected in Meudon behind the salvaged façade of the château d'Issy. This building now houses the Plaster Gallery.
In 1948 the property became the Musée Rodin de Meudon, part of the public institution Musée Rodin, which also includes the Hôtel Biron in Paris. The villa's rooms were restored in 1997 based on period photographs. The Plaster Gallery shows original plasters, studies and several successive states of major compositions such as La Porte de l'Enfer, Les Bourgeois de Calais, Balzac or the monument to Victor Hugo. An area devoted to techniques explains modelling, moulding, bronze casting and marble carving.
