Om museet
The Museum of Curiosities grew out of a popular Twitter account run by a Dublin cabaret performer who goes by the name Monsieur Pompier. The account shared strange images from old books, archives and forgotten corners of the internet, and over the years its curator turned that interest in the grotesque and the uncanny into a physical collection, helped by years of travel and performing.
The collection is displayed over two floors of a house on Lower Pembroke Street, a short walk from St Stephen’s Green and Merrion Square. Visitors find objects such as a two-headed cow, mummified remains, haunted dolls, clowns, Victorian relics, unusual taxidermy and antique medical devices. Many items are linked to folklore, medical mistakes, theatrical inventions or lost beliefs, and the exhibits also include entomological displays, skeletons, unusual books and household oddities from the Victorian period.
A visit begins with a short introduction from a member of staff on how the museum began, after which guests explore at their own pace. Video and audio effects add to the atmosphere. Evening tours called Hidden Horrors After Dark are offered separately.
