Om museet
Skibbereen Heritage Centre opened in 2000 in the restored Old Gasworks building on Upper Bridge Street, as a joint project of Cork County Council, Skibbereen Urban District Council, the Office of Public Works and Dúchas. Funding came from a European regional development grant, OPW architects designed the restoration, and Cork County Council provided the site and still owns the building.
The centre has two main exhibitions. The Great Irish Famine exhibition tells how the Skibbereen area lost more than a third of its people in the 1840s and became a byword for famine around the world. Through personal accounts, dramatisations, interactive stations and audio-visual films with subtitles in French, German and Irish, it explains the government’s response, relief works, the soup kitchen, the workhouse, evictions and emigration. A virtual tour introduces Famine sites in the town, and visitors are pointed to the burial pits at Abbeystrowry, where between 8,000 and 10,000 victims are buried. The second exhibition is devoted to Lough Hyne.
The centre also runs a genealogy service for the greater West Cork area, by appointment, and has published books and films, a Famine walking-trail app and a large database of genealogical records.
