Amsterdam Museum
City museum on the history of Amsterdam; its main building in the former Burgerweeshuis (civic orphanage) on Kalverstraat is being renovated, probably until 2030.
Om museet
The Amsterdam Museum was founded in 1926 as a museum of city history and is celebrating its centenary in 2026 with a festival at various locations around the city. In 1975, for the city's 700th anniversary, Queen Juliana opened what was then the Amsterdams Historisch Museum in its current main building between Kalverstraat and Nieuwezijds Voorburgwal.
The building complex itself bears witness to the city's history: in the late Middle Ages this was the site of the Sint-Luciënklooster, first mentioned in 1414. After the Alteratie of 1578 it passed to the Burgerweeshuis (civic orphanage), which housed the city's orphans here for almost four centuries until it moved out in 1960. Courtyards, gateways, facades designed by Jacob van Campen and the orphans' cupboards are reminders of that time.
The museum sees itself as a network museum that tells the city's stories together with residents, initiatives and artists – from 16th- and 17th-century city views and group portraits to fashion and everyday objects of the present. The main building is closed, and a temporary location at Amstel 51 was given up at the end of 2025. In September 2026 construction began on a comprehensive renovation designed by Neutelings Riedijk Architecten; the reopening has been announced for 2030.
Until then the museum is present in the canal house Huis Willet-Holthuysen and in Amsterdam in Motion in the Cultuurpark Westergas, which it curates and operates and where a multimedia city model of some 200 square meters shows Amsterdam's development.
