Om museet
Because the Oude Kerk (Old Church) had become too small for the growing city, a second parish church was built on Dam Square in the early 15th century, on an orchard donated by the citizen Willem Eggert. It was consecrated to Saint Catherine in 1409; to tell the two apart, people simply called it the new church.
Several fires struck the building, the worst in 1645, when the roof was completely lost. During the reconstruction the church received its magnificent furnishings: the richly carved pulpit, the copper choir screen, what is today the largest historic organ in the Netherlands, and tomb monuments such as that of Admiral Michiel de Ruyter. For centuries the space served not only for worship but also as a stock exchange, concert hall and venue for award ceremonies.
Because of its location next to the Royal Palace, the Dutch heads of state have been inaugurated here since 1814, most recently King Willem-Alexander in 2013, whose church wedding to Máxima also took place here in 2002.
After the major restoration from 1959 to 1980, the Nationale Stichting De Nieuwe Kerk, founded in 1979, took over operations and programming, as the parish could no longer afford the upkeep. Since then the church has been an exhibition venue without state subsidies that attracts around 150,000 visitors a year on average – with shows on art, photography and cultural history, the annual World Press Photo Exhibition and organ concerts.
