Walk-in iron sculptures by Portuguese artist Rui Chafes in dialogue with ten sculptures by Alberto Giacometti, shown together in the Netherlands for the first time – in collaboration with the Fondation Giacometti and the Gulbenkian Foundation.
Reliefs, plaquettes and portrait heads by Hungarian medalist Ede Telcs and his student Geurt Brinkgreve, based on a donation from the Brinkgreve family.
The first solo museum exhibition by the Oldenburg-based sculptor, featuring kinetic sculptures of wood and metal that humorously mimic human gestures (the accompanying text gives April 4, 2027 as the end date).
75 sculptures, reliefs and plaster models on Arp's organic formal language, with research findings on 21 plasters from the collection.
Om museet
The Beelden aan Zee museum was founded in 1994 by collector couple Theo and Lida Scholten and opened with their sculpture collection. Its initial focus was the human image: works in which sculptors explore both the outward appearance and the inner life of human beings. Today, by its own account, it is the only museum in the Netherlands devoted exclusively to modern and contemporary sculpture; the abstract tradition and a greater diversity of artists have since also come into focus.
The building by architect Wim Quist is set into the dune, directly beneath the historic Pavilion Von Wied, built by King William I in 1826. Two large circles form the floor plan; sand-colored concrete, granite and wood blend the building into the landscape, while patios and sculpture terraces open toward the sea. A glass wall bearing poems by Dutch and Flemish writers links the two halves.
The collection comprises more than 5,000 works, including some 1,000 plaster models and 2,000 medals, with pieces by artists such as Ossip Zadkine, Hans Arp, Tony Cragg, Kiki Smith and Yinka Shonibare; in 2023 a donation of 22 sculptures by Hans Arp was added. The museum presents around ten exhibitions a year. On the boulevard in front, freely accessible fairy-tale figures by Tom Otterness are on display. Brigitte Bloksma has directed the museum since 2022.
