Om museet

The collection dates back to 1866, when a society was formed in The Hague to found a museum of modern art. It grew into the municipal Gemeentemuseum, whose director H. E. van Gelder dreamed from 1912 onward of a new art building open to all walks of life.

The design came from Hendrik Petrus Berlage, who received the commission in 1927. He died in 1934, shortly before completion; his son-in-law E. E. Strasser finished the building with its distinctive yellow brick facade, which opened in May 1935. During the Second World War the occupying forces used it as a depot; it reopened in 1946. In the late 1990s the building underwent a comprehensive renovation, and in 2014 the covered Tuinzaal was added.

In 2019 the museum was renamed Kunstmuseum Den Haag. On behalf of the city it manages more than 160,000 objects: the world's largest Mondriaan collection with “Victory Boogie Woogie”, works of the Hague School and of modernism, an important Delft Blue collection, Islamic art, musical instruments and the largest fashion and costume collection in the Netherlands. The neighboring Fotomuseum Den Haag and KM21 are part of the same organization.

The city and the museum are planning a renovation and energy upgrade for the nearly hundred-year-old building; no timetable has been set yet.
