Om museet
The Lebbenbrugge lies on an old trade route, the Hessenweg, which led from German trading towns via the Hanseatic cities of Zutphen and Deventer to Utrecht and Amsterdam. At that time Borculo still belonged to the sphere of power of the Bishop of Münster; at the bridge over the Lebbinkbeek, today's Slinge, merchants crossed the border into Gelre, hence the name. In the late Middle Ages a small farm arose here, to which a transverse front house was later added.
The front house, built around 1550, served the lords of Borculo as a hunting lodge and later became a toll house, an inn and the home of tenant families. After the Peace of Westphalia in 1648 the place gained importance as a trading post. From the mid-18th century tenants lived on the farm as self-sufficient farmers. When the last residents moved out at the beginning of the 20th century, the house was badly dilapidated.
To save the listed building, the H.W. Heuvelstichting was founded in 1926; it acquired and restored the farm, is named after the teacher Hendrik Willem Heuvel, well known in the region, and still runs the museum today. In the front house visitors experience the atmosphere of farm life around 1900, in the rear house the old farmstead with an authentic Potstal. A visitor centre with farm implements, an exhibition on the sandy roads of the surrounding area in the attic, a new barn with historic wagons, as well as a museum garden and terrace complete the site.
