Om museet
Museum de Scheper is the historical museum of Eibergen and the surrounding area in the north-east of the Achterhoek. The foundation of the collection was laid by the amateur archaeologist and hobby historian Herman Schepers, who gathered and carefully documented many finds from the Second World War onwards. The museum is spread over a stately villa and an authentic farmhouse, which stand side by side.
The farm “de Vuurrever” originally stood in Haarlo and was due to be demolished in 1989. Schepers won over funding and volunteers; the farm was dismantled, stored with labelled parts and rebuilt in Eibergen in 1994 and 1995, with clay walls and a clay floor in the traditional manner. The municipality took over the collection, and the buildings remained in its ownership. Today the Museum De Scheper Foundation runs the museum on behalf of the municipality of Berkelland; around 55 volunteers take care of maintenance, supervision and exhibitions. The museum is registered in the Dutch museum register.
The permanent exhibition leads from geological finds from the time before the dinosaurs, through archaeology (including the Haarlo coin hoard and the Eibergen bronze hoard), to everyday objects of the 20th century. Further sections are devoted to farm life, industry and crafts, fashion and textiles, the occupation of 1940–1945 and the Eibergen writers Menno ter Braak and Willem Sluiter.
