Henk Chabot's images of refugees and prisoners in World War II juxtaposed with watercolors, drawings and paintings by Nour-Eddine Jarram on present-day migration and human dignity.
Om museet
The Chabot Museum began as a private initiative: in 1991 collector couple Rob and Christien Grootveld-Parrée acquired a villa on Rotterdam's Museumpark and in 1993 opened a museum there devoted to the Rotterdam painter and sculptor Henk Chabot (1894–1949). Since 2001 the museum has received modest public funding; it operates as a small network organization with the support of volunteers.
The building was designed in 1938 by architects Gerrit Willem Baas and Leonard Stokla as a private residence in the Nieuwe Bouwen style (Dutch modernism). Bright rooms, large windows and the connection to the garden reflect the ideal of light, air and space that shaped modern architecture in those years. The villa has been a listed monument since 2000, and at the end of 2020 it passed into the ownership of the Stichting Volkskracht.
The heart of the collection consists of paintings, sculptures and works on paper by Henk Chabot, including works in which he responded to the bombing of Rotterdam and the persecution during the occupation. Donations and further collections have been added, such as works by the artist Armando. Changing exhibitions connect Chabot's humanist view of people with positions in contemporary art; the museum also awards the Hendrik Chabot Prijs to Rotterdam artists.
