Two small presentations on the Strait of Hormuz as a bottleneck of world trade and on historic naval blockades.
The museum’s roots go back to the 19th century: Prince Hendrik of the Netherlands, a brother of King Willem III and a great patron of seafaring, assembled an important collection of ship models, around which a maritime museum was founded in Rotterdam in the 1870s. For a long time it was called Maritiem Museum Prins Hendrik.
In 1986 the museum moved into its current building on the Leuvehaven, a striking structure by architect Wim Quist with a triangular footprint and exposed construction; a cubic extension followed in 2004. In 2014 it merged with the neighboring Havenmuseum, whose historic ships, cranes and workshops now form the Museumshaven – according to the museum, the oldest and largest museum harbor in the Netherlands, located where the port of Rotterdam once began.
The collection comprises around one million objects and covers six centuries of Dutch maritime history, from ship models, nautical charts and atlases to modern offshore technology. Collecting follows a “Maritieme Canon” of the fifty most important themes in maritime history. Today, with interactive exhibitions such as the Offshore Experience and the hands-on children’s exhibition Plons!, the museum is explicitly aimed at families with children, parents and grandparents.
