Om museet
The Driels Museum arose from an idea of some town council members of the old Maasdriel, who, after a meeting in April 1976, suggested an Oudheidkamer (local antiquities room) for objects and tools of earlier times. Shortly afterwards the municipality set up a committee to collect and preserve old everyday objects; a deed of foundation regulated the board and purpose. Because more and more items were being offered from attics and barns, space soon ran short. In January 1985 the collection moved into the former school at Teisterbandstraat 38 in Kerkdriel, which was purchased in 1995; in 2002 a carriage shed was added, and the garage became an exhibition room.
The name changed several times: in 1999 to Driels Oudheidkundig Museum, in 2003 to today's Driels Museum. Since 2 March 2007, the museum has held the quality mark "Geregistreerd Museum". The operator is the Stichting Driels Museum, which is run exclusively by volunteers.
Visitors find five rooms furnished true to the original: a historic kitchen with a pump basin, a living room, a grocery shop from a bakery on the Maasbanddijk, a classroom with old desks and a mayor's room. In addition there are hundreds of objects from farming, fishing, carpentry, brickworks and basket weaving, as well as many photographs. Changing exhibitions and the annual publication "Drielse Vertellingen" deepen the local history; the foundation also cultivates the local dialect.
