Om museet

The Maarten van Rossemhuis was built between 1535 and 1540 for the influential Gelderland military commander Maarten van Rossem. Although it served as a residence, thick walls, corner towers, a stair tower and battlements recall a small castle. The building combines a medieval foundation with early Renaissance elements such as the façade reliefs with putti, scrollwork and profile heads. Prince Maurice and Johan van Oldenbarnevelt held meetings here in 1599. After centuries of occupation the house fell into disrepair, but at the end of the 19th century it was saved by the architects Pierre Cuypers and Victor de Stuers; it was restored and served as a district court.

Since 1934 the house has been home to the Museum Stadskasteel, which presents the town and its surroundings in permanent and temporary exhibitions. The collection covers art and crafts such as silver, pewter, copper and glass, old furniture and paintings, historical coins, maps, drawings and prints relating to the region, as well as a library and early photographs from 1860 onward. Highlights include works by the Zaltbommel-born painter Gerard Hoet, the oldest dated carved wooden "Molenbaard" (ornamental board of a windmill) in the Netherlands, and a drawing by Constantijn Huygens Jr. from 1657.

A special focus is the Zaltbommel-born illustrator Fiep Westendorp (1916–2004), known for Jip and Janneke and Pluk van de Petteflet. The permanent exhibition shows her work, parts of her living and working room and her drawing table, and there is a play zone for children. A period room presents Art Nouveau furniture from the Onder den Sint Maarten workshop. In the garden are the museum café and terrace.
