Om museet
The herbal bitter, later known under the name Els, goes back to the Genbroek estate in Beek, where G.J.H. Hennekens founded a distillery in 1821. Because of its success, the business moved in 1828 to the village centre opposite a listed farmstead on Wolfeinde and was later relocated into that farmstead.
In 1980 the distillery was sold to Heineken, which placed production with Bols. From 1980 to 1990 Bols Royal Distilleries continued to make Els La Vera in Beek, after which production moved to Zoetermeer. In 1994 Bols gave the restored stills back to the municipality of Beek, to be shown to the public as an industrial monument.
In 1995 a foundation was established, which set up the museum in one of the distillery buildings. Beek architect J. Wehrung combined the authenticity of the building with a contemporary presentation. The official opening took place on 29 September 2000.
The copper stills are at the centre. During visits, museum guides lead people through the building; in the former herb loft there is a slide show on the history of distilling and of Els La Vera, along with objects from the distillery. Afterwards the tasting room invites visitors to have a drink.
