Pampus lies on an artificial island in what is now the IJmeer, built up from 1887 on a shoal in the former Zuiderzee. The fort rests on almost 4,000 wooden piles and was completed in 1895. As part of the Stelling van Amsterdam (Defense Line of Amsterdam), it was meant to protect the approach to the capital via the IJ; two rotating armored turrets carried the heavy guns. In its more than 80 rooms, over 200 soldiers could live for months without outside supplies – with their own steam engine for electricity, water reservoirs and storerooms.

The fort was permanently manned only during the mobilization of 1914–1918; otherwise only a fort keeper and a machinist lived on the island. After the Afsluitdijk was built, Pampus lost its military importance, and in 1932 the last fort keeper left. During the Second World War the occupying forces dismantled the armored turrets; afterward visitors plundered wood and metal, and the open building fell into decay.

In 1980 the fort passed to a foundation that cleared it of rubble and opened it to visitors; today the Stichting Forteiland Pampus, which grew out of an initiative by Muiden residents, owns the island. In 2011 the fort received a new roof. Since 1996 Pampus has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site now listed as the Hollandse Waterlinies (Dutch Water Defence Lines). The island now supplies itself fossil-free with sun, wind and hydrogen, treats water from the IJmeer and grows vegetables in its own garden.

Prices include the round trip by ferry from Muiden; only the outbound trip is booked online, and you can return on any ferry. Free with the Museumkaart (only the ferry fare is payable). Tickets cannot be canceled. Card payment only on board, in the shop and in the Paviljoen. Postcode Loterij Voordeelagenda vouchers are valid.

The fort is accessible only via stairs and has many uneven floors; large parts are unsuitable for wheelchairs, rollators and strollers. The experience routes “Het Geheime Wapen van Amsterdam” and “Het Verhaal van Pampus” have level floors. A special wheelchair for a tour around the island can be reserved in advance via info@pampus.nl. The ferry from Muiden (De Stern) is not entirely step-free. Free parking throughout Muiden with a disabled parking permit.

In the engine room, children can turn the wheel, shovel gunpowder and communicate through speaking tubes; the shop offers a blacklight scavenger hunt with a UV lamp. During the fall holidays (October 10–25, 2026), the PampusLab opens daily with hands-on activities, included in admission. Children's birthday parties can be booked via the group form. The fort is largely unsuitable for strollers.

Transport & parkering

The island is car-free and can only be reached by boat (approx. 2.5 km off Muiden). Private boats can moor free of charge during opening hours (inner side for pleasure boats, outer side for larger vessels; shallow water with a basalt ring, harbor depth approx. 1.2–1.5 m, no overnight stays). Canoes and SUPs on the beach on the east side. For events there are departures from Amsterdam-IJburg (Bert Haanstrakade 1051, tram 26 to Lumièrestraat).

Pampus Paviljoen (open whenever the museum is open) with coffee, cake, changing lunch dishes made with ingredients from the island's own garden, Pampus beer and terraces; dinner evenings in winter (Winterlicht). Museum shop. No Wi-Fi for guests, and hardly any cell reception inside the fort.

Company outings, meetings, team building and parties for 20 to 1,200 guests, including boat transfer, catering and technical equipment; spaces include the Bergloods, Waterbassin, Fortwachterswoning and rooms in the fort, and after 17:00 the entire Paviljoen exclusively.
