Om museet
Thorn is known as the "white town", and the museum tells how that came about. Its beginnings reach far back before the Common Era: mammoth remains and other prehistoric finds came to light in the surrounding gravel pits, and amateur archaeologists found remains from Celtic and Roman times, including a Celtic coin hoard in summer 2020. In the late 10th century, around 992, the pious nobleman Ansfried and his wife Hilsondis founded a double monastery, whose first abbess was their daughter Benedicta. The "Land of Thorn" included several surrounding villages and also what is now Molenbeersel in Belgium.
The monastery developed into a secular foundation for noblewomen. The canonesses all came from the high nobility, had to prove an unbroken noble lineage and maintained contacts with Europe's princely courts. In 1795 French revolutionary troops occupied the mini-state; the abbess's palace was demolished, and of the former complex only the collegiate church, an outbuilding and a garden wall remained. Many of the canonesses' houses, by contrast, have been preserved.
The museum is an independent foundation that researches, collects and displays the history of Thorn. Objects relating to the town and the former foundation form the core, joined by archaeological finds such as coins. Twice a year there is a historical exhibition or a show about artists with connections to Thorn; the museum also turns attention to contemporary art and young talent from Central Limburg. Thematic areas are devoted to the canonesses, Celtic coins, artists and music, among other subjects.
