Om museet

In Hasselt, lime burning is already mentioned in the archives in 1504, and in Zwartsluis in 1538; it probably existed much earlier. In the kilns, mussels from the North Sea and the Wadden Sea were heated to over 1,000 degrees, using peat from the land of Vollenhove and from Drenthe as fuel. The shell lime was an important ingredient of mortar and concrete and was shipped as far as North and South Holland.

According to tradition, the Hasselt lime works was founded in 1823 by town secretary Zacharias Tijl and was later operated by an Amsterdam building materials firm. Two kilns from 1850 are preserved as a Rijksmonument; the younger kilns from 1946 and 1970 were demolished in 1994. In 1990 the site stopped operating as the last active shell-lime kiln.

The grounds were then restored and have been open to visitors since 1995. The old slaking house was moved to the Zuiderzee Museum in Enkhuizen; in its place stands a replica, the training house (Lehrhaus). It is furnished with tools, objects, archive pieces and pictures, and also serves as the reception area.

The museum is run by the Stiftung Kalkovens Hasselt, which consists entirely of volunteers. They guide visitors through the house and across the grounds, serve coffee and run a small museum shop. Most recently, the foundation collected money for permanent evening lighting of the kilns and for a barrier-free toilet.
