The castle goes back to the knight Herman Hoen, who in 1388 received the lordship in the marshy “Gebrook” from Duchess Joanna of Brabant; both the castle and the town are named after him. The oldest surviving part is the massive round tower from the late 14th or early 15th century. Because of its location on the trade routes to Maastricht, Aachen and Cologne, the complex was expanded in several phases into one of the largest castles between the Meuse and the Rhine.

Between about 1640 and 1656, Adriaan Hoen van Hoensbroek had the outer baileys and the core around the third inner courtyard rebuilt in the Mosan Renaissance style. After the medieval wing collapsed in 1717, a luxurious residential wing with a knights' hall, fireplaces and illusionistic ceiling paintings was added in the 18th century. At the end of the 18th century the counts' family left the castle, which then fell into disrepair.

In 1927 Count Frans Lothar sold the estate to the Ave Rex Christe foundation, which had it restored in the 1930s and again in 1986–1989. Today the municipality of Heerlen rents the castle and runs it as a museum through its heritage company Historisch GOUD. Visitors explore more than 40 historically furnished rooms, including the dungeon, a secret room and tower chambers; knights, archers and guides in historical costume regularly bring the site to life. In 2021 the castle received the VriendenLoterij Museumprijs, and in 2022 the ANWB named it the most beautiful castle in the Netherlands.

Thanks to an elevator, a large part of the castle is wheelchair-accessible; the 18th-century wing with its spiral staircases is not. A dedicated wheelchair route (from page 10 of the tour booklet) starts in the film room in the 17th-century attic, where a film shows the inaccessible areas. Accessible parking space about 50 m in front of the entrance; accessible restroom with baby changing table on the second floor of the castle building. Guided tours are also available for people with reduced mobility.

Daily scavenger hunt “Het Feest van Ridder Hoen”, explorer tour to ten special places, medieval games and shield painting; family version of the key tour. Children's birthday parties with dress-up and scavenger hunt for ages 4/5 to 8 (from €10.50 per child). Knight fight with “Kiddy Battle” every first Sunday. Strollers are left at the cloakroom, and the brasserie will warm baby bottles. Awarded “Kidsproof” in 2023.

Transport & parkering

Hoensbroek is part of the municipality of Heerlen and lies about 25 km from Maastricht and Aachen. Enter via the first footbridge. Bicycle parking at a dedicated rack (a second lock is recommended). The castle provides no public transport information.
