Om museet

The Maczek Memorial commemorates the 1st Polish Armoured Division under General Stanisław Maczek, which liberated Breda on October 29, 1944. Formed in Scotland in 1942, the division fought in France, Belgium and the Netherlands. After the war many of its soldiers were unable to return home because Poland had come under Soviet influence. Maczek himself lived in exile in Edinburgh, died in 1994 at the age of 102 and was buried in the Polish war cemetery in Breda.

Its predecessor was the Generaal Maczek Museum, opened in 1997 in the Trip van Zoudtlandtkazerne and run by the foundation "Museum Breda Polen 1939–1945 Generaal Maczek". When the rooms in the barracks were no longer available, a new building was erected directly behind the Pools Militair Ereveld on the Ettensebaan with the help of many volunteers and sponsors. Designed by Oomen Architecten, the building was due to open in March 2020 but, because of the COVID-19 pandemic, did not admit visitors until June 2020. A concrete wall about 20 meters long, embossed with photos of the liberation, guides visitors to the entrance.

Inside, an interactive map with images from 1944 and today and a multimedia wall trace the paths of six Polish soldiers between 1939 and 1945 and their lives after the war. The collection includes more than 1,000 objects, around 11,000 photos and a library; its centerpiece is Maczek's original uniform. There is also a screening room and a "Chambre de Réflexion" listing the names of the soldiers buried in the war cemetery. The memorial is run by the Stichting Maczek Memorial Breda with about 75 volunteers; the building belongs to the Stichting Generaal Maczek Memorial.
