The Dordrechts Museum goes back to the Vereniging Dordrechts Museum, founded on November 26, 1842, making it one of the oldest museums in the Netherlands. The first exhibition rooms were in the Boterbeurs on the Wijnstraat. Because the collection grew quickly, the city offered a larger building, and on July 6, 1904, the museum opened on what is now the Museumstraat.
The building has a long history: around 1350 the Agnietenklooster (Convent of St. Agnes) was founded here; after the Reformation the complex served as a plague house and orphanage and later as an asylum for the mentally ill, which closed at the end of 1898. In 1902 a South African Museum first moved into part of the building; the art museum followed after a conversion by the Dordrecht architect Bernardus van Bilderbeek, who also created the entrance through the garden.
In the 1970s the museum was expanded to include two neighboring buildings, based on plans by Walter Nikkels. The largest redesign to date followed in 2008–2010 to designs by Dirk Jan Postel: it added more space for the collection and temporary exhibitions, a glass entrance hall, and a winter garden, and since 2010 visitors once again enter the museum through the garden with its old trees.
The collection spans six centuries of painting – from 16th-century altarpieces and Dordrecht masters such as Aelbert Cuyp, Nicolaes Maes, and Aert Schouman to Ary Scheffer, the Hague School, and contemporary art. Together with Huis Van Gijn, the Hof van Nederland, and the Regionaal Archief Dordrecht, the museum forms an alliance.
