The Marius van Dokkum Museum is devoted to the work of the painter Marius van Dokkum, who is still alive and working. The connection to Harderwijk began with an exhibition at the Stadsmuseum Harderwijk that drew so many visitors that the parties jointly looked for a place for a permanent display.

In 2018 the museum opened in the former Snijkamer (anatomy hall) of the old university of Harderwijk, at Academiestraat 7. It was a major success with the public and soon became too small. With support from the VriendenLoterij, it moved to a larger, contemporary building at Academiestraat 14, which opened on October 6, 2026. It is run by the foundation of the Stadsmuseum Harderwijk.

Visitors can see audience favorites such as "Beste Reizigers," "Turbo," "Dansje in de Kerk" and "Anatomische les," plus new works, still lifes, portraits and landscapes, as well as works by artists who shaped Marius, such as Henk Helmantel, Jopie Huisman and Jan Steen. In the studio, the painter works one day a week, though which day is not fixed in advance. An audio tour in his own voice and a film about his life complete the visit.

Ramp and automatic sliding doors at the entrance, large elevator to all floors. A wheelchair for loan (not reservable) and folding stools for resting are available. Accessible parking spaces are at Kloosterplein and Vitringasingel; drop-off directly at the entrance on Kloosterplein is possible. Only assistance dogs are allowed.

The museum emphasizes that the humorous, easily recognizable paintings give children as much pleasure as adults. Children up to age 12 enter free.

The museum is in the historic center; the entrance is on Kloosterplein. Bicycles can be parked free of charge and under supervision at the Rijwielhuis (Academiestraat 3), which also offers e-bike charging.

No café in the building. The museum café of the Stadsmuseum Harderwijk is about 200 meters away. The museum shop is accessible during opening hours even without a ticket. Backpacks, large bags and wet jackets must be left in the cloakroom or a locker.
