Om museet
The Noord-Veluws Museum in Nunspeet is an art museum for painters of the northern Veluwe. From 1880 the area developed into a destination for city dwellers seeking unspoiled nature in an age of industrialisation and urbanisation. As in the French artists' colony of Barbizon, painters from The Hague and Amsterdam went outdoors here too, taking their paint tubes with them. A group of Impressionists formed around Nunspeet and Elspeet; more than 100 visual artists lived and worked in the region between 1880 and 1950, among them Arthur Briët, Willy Martens, Edzard Koning, Jan van Vuuren and Ben Viegers.
The museum goes back to the private initiative of Herman van Ree, who largely financed its construction and operation. The supporting foundations were established on 26 October 2011. The building is a new construction by the architects Kamsteeg + Bisschop and is connected to the Vrije Academie Nunspeet in the former school building on Stationslaan. The museum opened on 30 October 2014.
The exhibitions link the paintings with the stories of the painters and of the people who lived in this region. The permanent collection can also be viewed online. A collaboration with the neighbouring Vrije Academie, the Nunspeet visitor centre and other local partners extends the offering, along with a museum café, a shop and the Fré Drostzaal auditorium.
