Multimedia artist Udo Prinsen enters into a dialogue with Mondriaan and the Canadian painter Guido Molinari through a specially developed video and music installation.
Piet Mondriaan was born in 1872 in the house on Kortegracht in Amersfoort. At the time the building was a primary school where his father was head teacher; the family lived upstairs, and Piet spent the first eight years of his life here. After the family moved away, for a long time nothing recalled the later pioneer of abstract painting.
That changed thanks to architect Leo Heijdenrijk and his wife Cis Heijdenrijk-Osendarp, who turned the house into a museum and opened it in 1994; they received the Zilveren Anjer award for their efforts. The tour follows Mondriaan’s path from Amersfoort via Winterswijk, Amsterdam, Paris, and London to New York, showing how his art developed from naturalistic landscapes to compositions of lines and planes of color. Special features include a true-to-scale reconstruction of his Paris studio and a video and sound installation on his last work, Victory Boogie Woogie.
In 2022, with support from the Vereniging Rembrandt, the museum acquired nine early, still naturalistic works by Mondriaan dating from 1899 to 1908. There are also two long-term loans of geometric-abstract and constructive-concrete art by other artists. Temporary exhibitions relate Mondriaan’s ideas to contemporary positions; at the end of the visit, a hands-on studio invites visitors to create their own work. Today the Mondriaanhuis belongs to the Stichting Amersfoort in C, together with Kunsthal KAdE, Museum Amersfoort, and the architecture center FASadE.
