Modernités! Matisse tot Bacon

Om museet

The American couple William and Anna Singer settled in the artists' village of Laren in the early 20th century and built the villa De Wilde Zwanen there. William was a painter himself and Anna a musician; together they collected works by artist friends, French painters from the circle of the Barbizon School and Impressionist-style painters from the Gooi region.

After William's death, Anna decided to make the collection accessible to the public. The Stichting Singer Memorial Foundation was established in 1954, and in 1956 the museum and theater, which had been built onto the villa, opened. Over the following decades the collection grew through purchases and donations, at first mainly with works of the Hague School and the Amsterdam Impressionists, later specifically with Dutch modernism, including artists such as Jan Sluijters, Leo Gestel, Bart van der Leck and Jan Toorop. Seven bronzes by Auguste Rodin, including The Thinker, form the largest group of Rodin works in the Netherlands.

In 2017 the museum received a new theater and a central entrance area linking the villa, museum and theater wing; landscape architect Piet Oudolf redesigned the freely accessible sculpture garden. In 2018 Els Blokker-Verwer announced the donation of the Collectie Nardinc, for which a new museum wing was built. Today Singer Laren presents changing exhibitions on art from around 1880–1950 as well as contemporary work, and runs its own program in the theater.
