Om museet
The Museum Buren en Oranje is dedicated to the history of the small town of Buren in the Betuwe and its close ties to the Dutch royal family. It was here in 1551 that William of Orange, then only eighteen, married his first wife, the wealthy Countess Anna van Buren-Egmond. It was the first Orange marriage in the Netherlands, making Anna a princess and William the richest nobleman in the Netherlands; to this day Anna remains the only Dutch-born bride of the reigning House of Orange.
Since 1988 the museum has been housed in the old, listed town hall on the market square. From 1555 to 1985 the building was the seat of the municipal administration: originally an ordinary dwelling, it received its stepped gable with small stone figures, the balcony and the lantern on the roof around 1608; the façade was modernised in 1739/40. After municipal reorganisations the building became too small for the administration, which relocated.
The museum is run by the Oud Buren Foundation, a non-profit organisation (ANBI) that relies entirely on volunteers. It is open from April to October and offers guided tours on request.
